The mission of the 2010-2013 North American Odyssey (NAO), a kayak, canoe and dogsled expedition across North America, is to educate third through eighth grade students about the plants, animals, and people of the wildest remaining places in North America through an online curriculum, thereby empowering them to protect North America’s waterways and wildlands, while combating global warming. The NAO is an online educational experience of Wilderness Classroom, a nonprofit organization, where Amy is the director of development. Each year the Wilderness Classroom conducts a series of online learning adventures, which allow students to interact with expedition members exploring remote locations around the world. The Wilderness Classroom has conducted ten previous online expeditions in its eight years of existence, gaining participation of over 1,600 teachers and 60,000 3rd to 8th grade students from around the world.
