The mission of Monica’s project – the Nigerian Improved Cook Stove Program – is to reduce the rural woman’s energy burden and the impact of deforestation and climate change by identifying and promoting fuel efficient cook stove technology within Mfaminyen and other rain forest communities in Cross River State, Nigeria. Monica’s project engineered and popularized the fuel efficient Ekwuk cookstove. As of April 2009, over 4500 Ekwuk stoves have been built. A quantitative survey found that the average Ekwuk stove saved at least 2610 lbs or 14 cubic meters of fire wood per year. Roughly speaking, these stoves have to potential to reduce firewood usage and CO2 emissions by over 10,000 tons/year. The success of the project has led the Cross River State government to allocate approximately $100,000 of its annual budget for improved cook stoves. Monica’s Nigerian partner has written the concept note for implementation. Monica has a less direct, more supportive role and is working as a researcher at the International Center for Energy, Environment and Development in Abuja helping prepare Nigeria’s mitigation strategy for the UN world summit climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, December 2009.
